What is a Kettlebell?

A kettlebell is a cast iron weight shaped like a bowling ball with a handle resembling the handle of a tea kettle – hence the name. The kettlebell user wields the kettlebell in an array of ballistic, isometric, and isotonic movements to engage multiple muscle groups for integrative and time efficient exercise.  These techniques are believed to increase strength, stability, and flexibility.  Kettlebells are commonly used by track and field athletes, wrestlers, martial artists, and are also used by military special forces as a measure of physical fitness. Since kettlebells are extremely cost effective, they are of particular interest in the exercise and rehabilitation arena. Many kettlebell users claim benefits in general strength, endurance, and cardiovascular training.  After hearing these claims, I decided to investigate: what DOES science say about kettlebell exercise? Is it good? Bad? Ugly?
